Boat wraps in Sacramento are priced by covered area — $13–$17 per square foot with a $550 minimum, the same rate card as vehicles. Vinyl goes on the hull sides above the waterline, never below it. Cut-vinyl boat names and California CF registration numbers are the entry point, and the CF numbers have to be 3-inch block letters in a contrasting colour on the forward half of both sides.
How much does it cost to wrap a boat?
The same way a vehicle is quoted: by the area we actually cover, at $17 per sq ft up to 50 sq ft, $15 up to 100, $13 above that, with a $550 minimum. Boat length is a rough proxy, but the real driver is how much hull side you want covered and how complicated the shape is.

Boat wrap or boat lettering — which do you actually need?
Most owners come asking for a wrap and leave with lettering, because lettering solves the problem they actually had.

What are California's boat registration number rules?
Every vessel registered in California carries a CF number, and the state is specific about how it goes on. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a boat gets pulled over on the Delta.
- Both sides of the forward half of the vessel — not the transom.
- Block letters and numbers at least 3 inches high, reading left to right.
- A colour that contrasts with the hull background so it is legible.
- A space or hyphen between the CF prefix, the numbers, and the letter suffix — about the width of one letter.
- The validation sticker goes about 3 inches aft of the CF number.
We cut CF numbers to that spec as a matter of course, and we place the sticker gap for you so there is nowhere to put it wrong. If you are wrapping the hull, the numbers go on top of the new wrap, not under it — film over lettering is how people end up redoing both.
Requirements are set by the state and can change. Confirm current rules with the California DMV or the Division of Boating and Waterways if you need certainty for your vessel.
How is wrapping a boat different from wrapping a car?
Four differences decide whether a hull wrap works at all.
Above the waterline only. Vinyl does not belong below the waterline. Constant submersion, antifouling requirements and trailer bunk pressure all work against film. Anything below the boot stripe is a paint job, not a wrap.
Gelcoat has to be sound. Film bonds to the surface it is given. Chalky, heavily oxidised gelcoat needs compounding and polishing first — otherwise the wrap lifts, and it takes the oxidised layer with it on removal. We inspect before quoting, and sometimes the honest answer is that the hull needs correction before it needs vinyl.
Compound curves everywhere. A car door is nearly flat; a hull is curved in two directions at once, with strakes, chines and rub-rail returns. That is cast film, heat, and time — calendared vinyl will not hold those shapes and will pull back from the edges within a season.
Sun and water, all season. A boat on Folsom Lake or the Delta takes full Central Valley sun on horizontal surfaces and constant spray on the sides. Horizontal film always ages faster than vertical; on a boat the gap is wider still.
Which boats do you wrap?
Pontoons, bass and ski boats, centre consoles, runabouts, jet skis and personal watercraft, and aluminium fishing boats. Aluminium is worth a separate note: bare or painted aluminium hulls hold film well once properly prepped, and a wrap is often the cheapest way to make an older aluminium boat look new again.
Sailboats and larger cruisers we quote per vessel after seeing them — the hull shapes and access vary too much for a rate card to be honest.
How do you care for a wrapped boat?
- Rinse fresh water after every outing, especially in the Delta — mineral deposits etch film the same way they spot a car.
- Hand wash with pH-neutral soap. No abrasive hull cleaners, no acid wash, no pressure washer close to seams.
- Do not leave it wet on the trailer with bunks pressing into fresh film — let it cure before the first long tow.
- Cover it or slip it in shade where you can. Sun does more damage to a wrap than water does.
- Fuel spills come off immediately — wipe, do not scrub.

On sound gelcoat, yes — heat and patience take it off cleanly. On chalky, heavily oxidised gelcoat the risk is real, which is why we inspect before quoting and sometimes recommend correcting the hull first.
How long does a boat wrap last?
Less than the same film on a car that lives in a garage, more than one on a car that never gets washed. Sun is the limiting factor, not water: horizontal surfaces fade first, and a covered or slipped boat keeps its wrap looking right far longer than one that sits uncovered all summer.
Can you match my existing boat graphics or replace a faded set?
Usually. Send photos of what is there now. Old decals come off at $75 per hour, and we can rebuild a faded design from a photo or redraw it properly in graphic design if the original artwork is gone.
